While tools like Firebase provide basic insights into push notification performance, they often lack a comprehensive dashboard that consolidates data and presents it in a user-friendly format.
At Taleemabad, we frequently sent personalized push notifications tailored to various user segments via Firebase. These notifications include reminders and updates relevant to each grade level, ensuring that users received content suited to their needs. However, the absence of a detailed view into the performance and trends of these notifications highlighted the necessity for more robust tracking solutions.
This prompted the development of a custom dashboard designed to provide visibility into notification metrics, which in turn would facilitate more informed decision-making.

To address our tracking needs, I designed a dashboard that integrates data from various sources. The initial step involved populating raw event data from Firebase into BigQuery. I constructed a specific table for Firebase notifications, capturing essential metrics such as open and receive rates.
Once the notifications table was established in BigQuery, I linked it to Power BI to create an intuitive dashboard. This system allowed us to visualize data effectively, making it easy to discern patterns and trends. Such structured information is invaluable in identifying optimal send times and understanding user behaviors.
Key notification types tracked within our dashboard included:
- Video Notifications: Encouraging users to engage with educational videos.
- Home Notifications: Directing users to the appβs home screen.
- Test Notifications: Prompting students to access and complete tests.
- Survey Notifications: Inviting parents and users to participate in surveys.
- Parent Portal Notifications: Providing access to essential resources and communication.
3. Measuring User Engagement and Retention π
One of the primary objectives of our push notifications was to improve user engagementβespecially among different grade levels. For instance, Grade 1 users received notifications tailored specifically to their educational content. By sending grade-specific messages, we significantly increased interaction rates.
Furthermore, we aimed to re-engage inactive users through timely reminders. We implemented a strategy that sent notifications at 7, 14, and 30-day intervals since the last active session. Measuring the open rates of these notifications enabled us to fine-tune our approach, ensuring we struck the right balance between frequency and relevance.
